Good evening Hallman Community!  This is Jessica Brenden, principal of Hallman Elementary School with your weekly Hallman message.  This week at Hallman is conference week.  We meet with families from 8 AM to 8 PM today and tomorrow.  If you haven’t scheduled a time yet, please call the school to do so.  Also, there is no school this week due to conferences and the Thanksgiving holiday. We’ll see you Monday!  The book fair is going during conferences--it will be open tomorrow from 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM, so if you haven’t visited yet, tomorrow is your last chance. In other news, you should be aware of two things coming up:  there is a music program on December 5 for the choir and students in Eberly’s, Broyles’, and Rodriguez’ classes.  On December 6 is the December early release Wednesday.  Finally, our attendance rate is just above 94%.  Two years ago, the attendance rate for the year was 93%, last year it was 93.5%, and this year, we are aiming for 94% or higher.  Attendance patterns in elementary school are a predictor of future success in school, so let’s all establish great patterns of attendance now!  Go huskies! Thanks for listening and have a great evening!

Good evening Hallman Community!  This is Jessica Brenden, principal of Hallman Elementary School with your weekly Hallman message.  This week at Hallman, we have two days you need to know about.  The first is early release on Wednesday.  Students will get out of school at 12:30.  Please make a plan for dismissal.  On Friday, teachers have a grading day.  There is no school on Friday so teachers can work out grades to prepare for conferences later in the month.  In other news, you need to be aware that retake day is Tuesday, November 7.  Make note of that on your calendars.  I have some really happy news to share, also:  Our counselor, Mrs. Silbernagel, was nominated for a Crystal Apple Award.  There is a ceremony on November 2 for the Salem and Keizer communities to celebrate the recipients of both nominations and awards.  Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the Elsinore Theater box office.  Also coming up soon is McTeacher’s night!  This is November 9 from 4:30 to 7:30 at the McDonald’s on Devonshire.  McTeacher’s night is a fundraiser for Outdoor School.  See you there! Last week, I shared that we get about 30 calls per day to change a child’s dismissal plan.  Please make those plans with your child before school starts so you can send in a note to tell us about any changes.  We appreciate the help! Finally, I want to let you know that our attendance rate is 94.7%, which is a little lower than the average of elementary schools in Salem. Let’s show the Salem community some Husky spirit by bringing up our attendance rate!  Thanks for listening and have a great evening!

Weekly message--September 25

posted Sep 21, 2017, 7:05 AM by Jessica Brenden

Greetings Hallman Community!

This is Jessica Brenden, Principal of Hallman Elementary School with your weekly Hallman message.

This week, we have been getting really focused in classrooms, in teaching and reteaching routines, and recognizing students for following routines and meeting expectations.  Our huskies are doing great!  Give your kiddo a high five for being a great learner this week! When students don’t meet expectations repeatedly, we send home something called a “Notice of Concern.”  If you receive one of these, please read it over and call the school if you have questions.  If something bigger happens and we need your help, we will give you a call to talk about what happened and work as a team with you to develop a plan.  Together, we can do great things for your child!

In other news, there have been many questions about an opportunity to order Hallman Husky gear.  We are getting that organized, so watch Friday Folders for more information coming home about that. Thank you!

Dismissal this week is going a little more smoothly.  80% of our students are picked up in 20 minutes, which is GREAT!  If you are in the 20%, please be sure to pick up your child or children in a timely manner.  Thanks!

Also this week, I want to give you another reminder that we will start enforcing dress code on October 2.  Please call or visit with Mrs. Caudillo if you need help with clothing.

Finally, our first assembly of the year will be on September 28.  At this assembly, we will be recognizing students who demonstrated excellent responsibility.  Families are always invited to these assemblies--we love having you join us!

One last reminder: our parent group, Cafecitos, meets weekly from 9-11 on Fridays.  They are planning fundraisers to bring in money so they can plan fun family nights with food and games and maybe a movie.  If you want to be part of this bilingual group, please stop in!

Weekly message--September 11

Greetings Hallman Community!  This is Jessica Brenden, principal of Hallman Elementary School with your weekly Hallman message.  I have a few reminders and a little news for you this week.  The first reminder is about dismissal.  If you are picking up by car, you can do that in front of the school.  Please stay in your car and work your way through the line so we can load your child and keep the line moving.  If you want to pick up by car but don’t want to wait in line, then we can release your child with the walkers to meet you at a designated spot in the neighborhood.  If you walk your child home, you can meet him or her at the back of the school.  Middle school siblings will be asked to wait off school grounds until school gets out, at which point they can meet siblings at the back of the school to walk them home.  Students who go home by bus or go to the Kroc center in the afternoons wait in the cafeteria until their busses arrive.  Thanks for your help with making dismissal go smoothly.

Coming up this week at Hallman, we get to welcome our kindergarteners into the Hallman family!  We are excited to have them here and get to know them!

The final reminder I have is that at this time of year, we practice locking down our school in case of dangerous situations.  This practice must happen in the first ten days of the school year.  Please talk to your children about why we practice what to do in dangerous situations, and that by practicing, we will know what to do and how to be safe if we are ever in a dangerous situation.  Thanks for your help in talking this over with your kids.

Finally, you should know about a weekly parent meeting that happens.  It is called Cafecitos and all parents are invited.  This is a place where parents connect with one another AND share ideas and plan for school improvements.  This meeting WAS on Wednesdays before but has now moved to Fridays from 9 to 11.  See you there!

Thanks for listening and have a great evening!
